Originally from Battle Creek, Michigan, Commander Remaley began his career in law enforcement while serving as a Military Police Officer in the United States Army during the latter part of his career. He retired in December 1992, was accepted as a Reserve Officer in March 1993, and later employed as a Communications Dispatcher. He was promoted in January 1995 to Patrolman and attended the Anchorage Police Department Academy. In May 1997 he was promoted to Sergeant and in October 2005 he was promoted to Lieutenant becoming the first to hold this position since 1983. In 2008 his title was changed to Operations Commander. Thomas has a special commission with the Alaska State Troopers and was a member of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) for over nine years. He serves as a Department Armorer, the Field Training Officer Supervisor, and is an Alaska Certified Firearms Instructor Trainer. Thomas is a graduate of the 153rd class of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Law Enforcement Management.
