Welcome to Palmer, Alaska
The City of Palmer is located 42 miles North of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway and has over 6,163 residents. The surrounding communities of Butte, Sutton and the Greater Palmer area have roughly 15,000 people who work, shop, or travel through Palmer. Additionally, the city of Wasilla is located 10 miles to the West and introduces a large number of people to the Palmer area. Like other Alaskan cities, the summer tourist season swells the population significantly.
Palmer is the location of many of the Borough's major businesses; the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Headquarters Complex; the Matanuska-Susitna School District Administration Office; the Third Judicial District Court; Department of Corrections, Mat-Su PreTrial facility; Alaska State Troopers - "B" Detachment; the Palmer Pioneer Home and Senior Center complex; the Matanuska Electric Company; the Matanuska Telephone Company, the State Division of Forestry, the Alaska State Fair, an Airport capable of supporting small jet aircraft, an 18-hole golf course and more. All of these contribute significantly to the daily population of Palmer.

The Palmer Police Emergency Dispatch Center (also known as "9G Base")
This is the central dispatch facility for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, and is staffed by 11 Police/Emergency Dispatchers and one Communications Supervisor. The Palmer EDC dispatches for the Palmer Police Department and 11 Fire Departments in a fire service area which covers approximately 625 square miles; 10 ambulance service departments, with 487 volunteers, covering an area of approximately 25,260 square miles.
The photo above depicts some of the dispatch consoles used in the EDC. When the center is fully staffed, three emergency dispatchers work each eight hour shift. The EDC monitors and transmits on 15 radio frequencies and has enhanced 911 capabilities which are tied in to the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN). The Palmer Police Department is the primary P.S.A.P. for the Matanuska Borough.
